Yegor Chernyshev

Life took a turn for me the past year. I feel like the most significant events in my life creep up on me when I least expect them. I applied to my university over a weekend simply on the context that most of my childhood friends were going there...and I got in. I applied to my master's degree on a train ride back from Manhattan over a text I received from a close friend of mine during that same ride. I incorporated a company and everything associated with it, over the course of two hours on one quiet evening. I found out my sibling was getting married when I sent my mother a text showing off my newly acquired TV, to which her one and only response was "Save your money, your sister is getting married." Some might call it reckless and carefree, but those who know me, know I am a very calculating individual. I actually overthink and overanalyze everything and set up mental gameplans for my life, years out into the future. Yet, for all my over-thinking, it seems that my best and most important decisions have been made without a thought behind my eyes and a "eh, why not" attitude. It made me really wonder whether all my over-planning was worth it, and whether or not I should just start becoming more impulsive. These are all stories for another time however, as this one is about a story that took place August 2023.

## Prologue

I finished all my master's studies around December 2022. I had completed all the necessary coursework, applied for graduation and got approved. The months that followed, I mostly practiced leetcode, worked on personal projects and merely existed (thanks to my parents generosity for keeping their offspring alive). I mostly waited for the formal graduation ceremony that happened in May 2023.

Around this time, I began intensely applying for jobs. The scorching job market of the pandemic era was beginning to sizzle, and the competition started to heat up. I knew *what* I wanted to do, but was pretty open to applying to everything, everywhere. Somewhere in that application chaos cycle, I received an email about a role with a request to have a quick call about my background and the position. I genuinely do not remember when and how I applied for the job, but it turned out to be for a position in my dream field, **financial engineering**. I won't bore you with the interview details here, but over a month of anxiety riddled nights and several interview rounds later, I was presented with an offer I didn't want to turn down. The catch? I needed to relocate to Virginia...*and* they didn't provide relocation assistance. The best I got, was a negotiation to give me a month of remote work at the start to give me time to move.

## Epilogue

It has now been exactly a year since I relocated, and for better or worse, I agreed to extend my lease another year. It has been quite the journey. During this time I managed to survive on my own, get some mental healing in from the generational trauma and mental taxation that comes with living with your family for so long, and began to acclimate to "adulthood". 

Unfortunately, the experience also left me with some thoughts to churn through. During my initial move, the sense of adventure and independence motivated me like no other to push me to set higher goals and take action on the dreams I have put off for so long. But I also realized that over time, a sense of comfort and routine put me into the same lifestyle I had growing up as a child. I have grown bored of my day to day tasks and find myself putting off the very things I have sought to achieve. Every time I travel abroad, I experience this overwhelming sense of motivation, ambition and restlessness. My mind gets flooded with all the things I want to build, do and become. And I have the urge to start that change, right then and there. However, upon returning back home, I find myself losing all of that, as if flying back home takes me through some misty door which denies any of that energy from entering. Now I'm sure there can be a plethora of reasons for this, and I know that I can also mix things up in my day to day life to try to rekindle some of that energy. But I also wonder if I should lean into this newfound knowledge about myself and perhaps consider changing roles and relocating more frequently. Perhaps move to Europe for a few years; pursue a PhD.


Starting a New Chapter

I have long wanted to try my hand at making a game. Having grown up playing everything from the original Doom to the latest triple A game, I saw over the years the ability that games had in conveying an experience that no other medium could. Growing up it felt like games were always looked down upon and never accepted as works of art. This outlook has changed in recent years, as has my attention span and dedication to seeing things through to the end. Given the ever increaing computing power and its decreasing costs alongside the promise of augmented reality devices, I felt now is as best a time as any to try my hand at the wonderful world of 3D design.

## I Came, I Saw, I Got Overwhelmed

That statement can probably sum up most of my experiences as a teen when it came to picking up new skills. I would always have a desire to learn something, pick up the basics really quickly and then either grow bored of it or become passionate about an idea way out of my league that would overwhelm and make me quit. Something changed in me when I went to university and finally started to see things through to the end. It came with a combination of many other maturities that I can only attest to as being my "late-bloomer" phase. The reason I mention this, is back in highschool, I flirted with the idea of making a game. I didn't have any particular idea in mind, just that I wanted to build something that remotely resembled what I saw on the market: 3D worlds with a protagonist and a gripping story that lasted a few hours from beginning to end. It was then when I learned hands on how daunting of a task it was, and why entire billion dollar teams are tasked with making the latest triple-A hits. There's the writing, the lighting, the character modeling, the animation rigging, the soundtrack...the list goes on and on. Although that is all common sense and I was aware of everything I would have to make to see such a project through, reality hits differently when you spend more than a day learning how to properly rig up and animate a walking bear.

## Back to the Future

Now it is 2023, and computing power continues to increase across the board even with mobile devices housing the latest in fancy graphical technology; from specialized GPU chips to ray-tracing technology. And with doomsday headlines preaching of AI replacing all of mankind's work, I decided to embrace my artistic side and pretend I am a well-off Roman citizen in the days of old, practicing nothing but art and drink. Well no, not really. But with work being done by R&D teams all over the globe on AR (augmented reality) devices, I figured we're not far from the integration of such digital worlds with our everyday lives. And anything that is built in the spacial dimensions of AR would have to be a 3D model. Thus, I figured I'd get a head start before the world sees a spike in demand for AR apps.

As with programs in many fields, there is a separation of concerns in the world of 3D. Usually, you have one program where you handle the character modeling and then another program where you handle it's integration in a game, VFX environment or other. There are a plethora of options to choose from, but seeing that my piggy bank was rather light, I opted to use [Blender](https://www.blender.org/) for the modeling (a sort of Swiss army knife for the world of 3D and a free, wonderful, open source project). All of my earlier attempts to use Blender have ended with me learning nothing more than how to make loop cuts before deciding there are more enjoyable things to waste my time on. Oh how wrong I was. Finally getting that a-ha moment when I learnt the shortcuts and workflow of a standard project filled me with the same kind of rush and enjoyment I got back in the days from learning how to first code. Not that seasoned coding veteran feel of learning new syntax but that "mom, look what I made!" moment when a 3D object actually looks in a scene how you want it to.

No matter what I did, it always felt like some indie copy-pasted horror game. It neither looked low-poly and cute, nor high quality and oozing with charm. Thus, I opted for an isometric approach to the scene instead.*

When it came to integrating my work into an environment, I wanted to have my little 3D world on the web, right on my website alongside the rest of my content. I wanted people from all over to play in the scene and not have to worry about downloading any new programs or having expensive hardware to run it. This landed me squarely in the world of [ThreeJS](https://threejs.org/), a JavaScript library that allows you to render and interact with 3D scenes right in the browser. Although it wasn't as simple as dragging and dropping my Blender file into the assets folder on my webpage, it surely beat potentially writting C code to handle OpenGL stuff. I even decided to go a step further and use [React Three Fiber](https://docs.pmnd.rs/react-three-fiber/getting-started/introduction) in order to better integrate the scene into my React components. But that was more like syntactic sugar.

In closing, I just wanted to share my starting adventures into the world of 3D design. I have much to learn and many more projects to build and improve on. I hope that you too, never give up on something you've always wanted to learn, even if you have to come back to it years later.

Creator of Worlds

Why, when there are tons of platforms and libraries to choose from to develop a personal site, and tons of readily available free-resources to host them on, do you create an entire full-stack application from the ground up just for your personal site? **_Because I can_**.

## The Situation

My old site was probably created in four hours, maybe less. And most of that time was spent redesigning the layout over and over again until I was satisfied with the look of it. However, I was ultimately never a fan of it and I don't think any visitors were all too impressed with it either. This, however, was a problem as I began to apply to jobs and notice a decent amount of traffic to my site. Unfortunately, at that time I was preoccupied with finishing up my graduate studies at NYU and I had neither the time nor energy to refactor it.

Well, now I have finally survived graduate school and entered a new chapter of my life: ~~unemployement~~ adulthood. And with this new free time on my hands and the crushing anxiety of artificial intelligence making employment obsolete, I decided to expand my tech stack by taking a deeper dive into web development.

## yegor.codes Reborn

### The Old Site's Tech Stack

The original site was powered almost entirely by React. It was a single-page application that connected directly to Google's Firebase for the backend. Most assets and data was static as I didn't even have a chance to move it to a proper database for storage. So it was nothing more than a glorified HTML file that I fragmented into React components and glued together visually with Material UI.

World, say hello to **yegor.codes Mark II** (there will be many more, I'm sure, as there is a brutal fight between my restlessness and my desire for perfection). This new site is primarily powered by NextJS with front-end components handled by React and the backend via Node. I decided to make this version of my site more permanent, intending for it to be built upon moving forward. Thus, I decided to separate as many concerns as possible into individual compartments that can be swapped out later. That extended to my desire to have complete control over the site from a full-stack perspective. Firebase-specific calls were swapped out for Node RESTful API calls, static information was replaced with a MongoDB cluster, and slowly, over time, no specific software had complete reigns over the project.
